What a WASTE!
6 Billion Pounds of Produce Are Wasted Due to “Imperfections”
Supermarkets reject fruits and veggies that are unique in size, shape or color to meet consumer demand for perfection. It’s part of the reason our country throws away 40% of the food we produce, which ends up in landfills where it turns to methane — a greenhouse gas 100 times more potent than carbon monoxide. When 21% of our water, 18% of our land and 10% of our energy is used to grow our country’s food, that’s an awful lot of resources to be wasting. Especially when 41 million Americans are food insecure.
Our mission is to reduce food waste and improve healthy food access for all. That’s why for every box purchased, we donate produce to local food pantries.
Don’t Judge an Orange by its Peel.
We believe that beauty is in the mouth of the beholder and that perfection is boring.
As humans we aren’t perfect and we don’t think our food should be either. To measure the worth of a piece of fruit (or a human), it’s what’s inside that counts. We’re glad to know that lots of you agree. Together our team of food waste warriors are making “lemonade from lemons.” We’re making a significant impact in reducing waste and helping the community around us.
PEOPLE IN NEED FED
UNITED - WE EAT
What if we could help feed people in need, simply by what we put in our own mouths?
That’s exactly what our customers are doing. Because for every Perfectly Imperfect box purchased, we in turn donate fresh fruits and vegetables to food pantries. We think it’s absurd that more than 40 million people in our nation go hungry, when nearly 40% of our food supply is being wasted. Right here in our own backyard, 25% of residents live in food deserts, 1 in 6 are food insecure and 1 in 4 are obese.
Our mission is to evolve our food system to ensure that everyone, no matter their economic situation, has access to the fresh, nutritious foods our body needs to live life to its fullest.
It is my honor to do this important work on your behalf. Afterall, we can’t rescue any food without loyal customers who are also committed to our mission. I hate waste. I hate inefficiency. I love food and our planet. And I love solving problems. My family has been selling produce for over 100 years. Perfectly Imperfect was born as a result of the waste I witnessed at all steps in the food chain and the need I saw right in my own city.
I am thrilled to share all these wild and wonderful fruits and vegetables with you. They are perfectly imperfect just like each of us and they are just as nature intended. Thank you for your commitment to reducing waste and your desire to support local farms and small business all while improving the world around us and helping your neighbors in need.
Sincerely, Ashley Weingart FOUNDER & CEO
